Today my friends, I would like to talk about the celebration of Earth Day and what it all means, what you can do to help, and how your choices affect the whole planet!
What is Earth Day & How it Started?
Earth Day is the day designated for celebrating and showing our appreciation of the earth’s environment and awareness of the issues that threaten it. Threats such as pollution of our water and air, global warming, contamination of our soil, and ultimately the effects on our health.
Earth Day is actually one of two days. Some people choose to observe it on the first day of Spring which is the vernal equinox that occurs on or around March 21st.
Others choice to recognize it on April 22nd. This day was designated when a U S senator in 1970 named Senator Gaylord Nelson who proposed a bill designating to have a national day to celebrate the earth. Since that time, Earth Day has been officially observed in April.
Presently, Earth Day is observed in 175 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network. The passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act are considered to be products associated with the 1970 Earth Day.
What Can You Do For Earth Day:
- Earth Day is a time to think about what are the consequences of our choices?
- What products are better for the earth?
- What should we avoid and what products we should be using that are environmentally safe, healthy for our families, animals, and all the inhabitants on our planet?
Changes we can make that Earth Day to Commit to Our Environment:
- Eat green, organic & local harvest on Earth Day and every other day of the year! –Going organic, green, or local harvest & being health conscious of what we eat all year long. Make sure all meats are organic or locally bought. Convention factory farmed meats and dairy production contribute to water pollution and other environmental problems. Waste from these farms often seeps into our waterways, sickening people and killing aquatic life.
- Buying earth friendly products if you are building or remodeling you home. Some ideas are flooring made from cork or bamboo, these are all renewable resources that help protect our environment and you.
- Recycling, reusing all products that we can! Small things like: Buying only what you need, saving glass jars from juice or other products you bought and thoroughly cleaning them, use them to store leftovers can reduce so much waste in our landfills.
- Choosing energy-efficient products can save families about 30% ($400 a year) while reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases. ENERGY STAR is the government’s backed symbol for energy efficiency. The ENERGY STAR label -we know we buying helping the environment and our wallets by saving energy, but still getting products that we want with all the features, style or comfort that we are expecting.
- Use Natural cleaning products that are free from toxic chemicals: baking soda, peroxide, or white vinegar. They are kills germs, are inexpensive, and are extremely environmentally friendly, no toxic fumes to breathe or pollute your body!
- Reducing pollution in your house! Making the right choices at home can affect the amount of pollution outside your home as well as inside. You help stop pollution and save some money! Little changes can help to reduce pollution and greenhouse emission. — Paint with a brush, not a sprayer, purchase “Green Power” for you home’s electricity, have air conditioning systems checked in the Spring and heating systems checked in the Fall,- learn more ideas @http://www.epa.gov/air/actions/at_home.html .
- Stop Using toxic Chemical Pesticides: Pesticides contain many toxic chemicals that are extremely harmful to your health and the environment. Use AlwaysEco Safe All Natural Pest Control that is completely made from botanical ingredients and will eliminate all those nasty bugs from your home. Click here to check this product out!
- Be green in your yard –if you use a power mower, make sure it is a mulching mower to reduce grass clippings. Use the grass clipping for compost & also add you food waste to reduce the amount of garbage that you send to landfills and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. See EPA’s GreenScapes program for tips on how to improve your lawn or garden while also benefiting the environment. For weed control –Don’t Use Toxic Pesticides- try using undiluted white vinegar – it will kill the weeds & is environmentally friendly.
There are so many small changes you can make that can make a big difference and I have only touched on a few of them! We need to make Earth Day in 2012 the year of many changes starting at home! It seems that environmental issues have been put on the back burner as we are in the midst of a global recession. It’s time for all of us to Unite and change the damage that we have done to our planet. There is no time to waste – we have one planet and let’s face it we have not treated her with the respect and care that God wanted us to. So now is the time to give our world the care and support so that we can ensure a healthy future for our children and all future generations.
